Hosted by the Michigan School Safety Initiative, this learning community is a dynamic professional development opportunity for administrators, educators, and staff committed to fostering safer school environments. This interactive program guides school safety team members as they work together toward effective, community-responsive safety plans.

Participants will discuss how to assess and enhance existing policies and emergency procedures, bridge gaps in prevention, response, and recovery, and align safety strategies to create more cohesive plans. The program also promotes clear, consistent communication across schools and school personnel.

Grounded in research from the University of Michigan, this learning community highlights the essential role of prevention and shared responsibility in achieving safe and supportive school environments.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this learning community, participants will be able to:

  • Define comprehensive school safety.
  • Locate evidence-based strategies to address gaps in school safety plans.
  • Improve communication among districts, school administrators, and building staff for effective planning and response to school safety issues.

Application

  • This learning community is designed for both individuals and teams. If applying as a team, only one application is required. You will be asked to provide the names and contact information of all team members.
  • Selection will prioritize schools and districts prepared to actively participate in all program activities. Preference will be given to schools and districts in Michigan, as the program focuses on state-specific policies and resources.
  • To apply, please complete the application in full. All submissions must be received by July 25, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. EST.
  • Applicants will be notified of their selection status no later than July 30, 2025.
